STRAIGHT TALK FROM YOUR CANDIDATE FOR
MAYOR OF S.F. --CHICKEN JOHN!

Our Award-Winning Formula-- Gags, Goofs, Girls-- and now, POLITICS!

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH
@ 12 Galaxies-- 9 PM sharp!

For Immediate Release:
San Francisco-- As Ask Dr. Hal! once more treads the boards at 12 Galaxies, 2565 Mission Street
near 22nd, excited patrons are expected to flock to that Boho watering hole in ever-expanding numbers.
For now comes this ultra-rare one-shot, the latest irritating iteration of the award-winning (in the Bay
Guardian) show. And take note: our new and improved show promises to be at Nine PM sharp,
a time fewer people are expected to profess to find more than ordinarily inconvenient. This is no joke-- folks,
we have SO MUCH NEW MATERIAL that we ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO BEGIN AT 9:00! Up to three hours
of concentrated, industrial strength show--

POLITICAL HISTORY IN THE MAKING!

Hear the Platform of Chicken John-- the People's Candidate!
Yes, by now you've probably heard that Chicken John is running for Mayor of San Francisco.
The point isn't to "win"  Gavin Newsom's going to do that  the point is to fight a stellar losing battle;
to draw attention to a number of issues that will otherwise be ignored; and to have fun doing it.

Stegosaurus vs. Ceratosaurus! Who will win?
A different contest, aeons ago when the earth was younger and hotter. Millions of years ago, giant
dinosaurs roamed the earth. The famous (and now eponymous) Stegosaurus was one of these.
A genus of armored ornithischian thyreophoran from the Late Jurassic Period (Kimmeridgian to Early
Tithonian) of what is now western North America, Stegosaurus, known from its distinctive tail spikes and
dorsal plates, is one of the most recognizable Mesozoic saurians.
A large, heavily-built herbivorous quadruped, Stegosaurus had a distinctive and unusual posture: an
arched back, with minute head and short forelimbs held very low to the ground, a configuration once
described (by non-Stegosaurus) lovers as suggesting "a fat man doing push-ups." The massive, muscular
tail, terminating in (usually) two pairs of flesh-piecing spikes, was held higher when not serving as a tripodal
prop to support the beast when it reared up to forage.
This spectacular array of plates and spikes has been the subject of much speculation.
Stegosaurs were most diverse in the late Jurassic, though the genus Dravidosaurus lived in southern India
as recently as the late Cretaceous, when the group went extinct with the rest of the Dinosauria.
Larger than such other stegosaurids as Kentrosaurus and Huayangosaurus, the roughly bus-sized
Stegosaurus nevertheless shared many of the same anatomical features, including the tail spines and
plates, which were seen in most other stegosaur genera. Now KrOB has prepared another dazzling "edit"
across 210 million years of Evolution, recently shown at Burning Man on the Neverwas Steam Stage.
Once more the moist, froggy bellowing and bleating of the Stegosaurus will sound as it waddles into battle
in the cavernous confines of 12 Galaxies. Its opponent: the fierce, carnivorous Ceratosaurus nasicornis.
See giant beasts battle for survival. Once again, we bring you more rip-roaring stop-motion animation with
"The KrOB Touch." From the voluminous visual files of mighty KrOB. This absolutely educational and
scientific presentation is offered as part of our ongoing show at the Best Night Club Experience for the
Discriminating-- Twelve Galaxies. And, unbelievably, though it may strain credulity, this veritable
Omega of Entertainment will admit & welcome you for an altogether insignificant and trifling admission:

STILL SEVEN PUNY DOLLARS!

New! KrOB's Film Farm Prevue!

Every time there's an Ask Dr. Hal! show, there'll be a KrOB's Film Farm two days later. Remember that
irreducible maxim. In this case, at Chez Poulet, 3359 ARMY (Cesar Chavez) St. @ Mission, KrOB will present
Phil Tucker's immortal Bulldada Classic, the one and only Robot Monster (1953). With added features: EYENOISE du JOUR (to be announced) / SUPER-SECRET SPY SPECIALS, FREE HOT BUTTERED POPCORN, DRINKS and those tempting movie theater SNACKS. Mmmmm-- boy!

That's KrOB's Film Farm-- Wednesday, SEPT. 26th 8PM-- FREE!

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.

A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

Thanks.

John Hell

Set List:

Re-Live Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear

Yes, Virginia, there is a McOdeon, as surely as stoned elves dance on my head and cause my hangover to get even worse. Yes, we bring back some denizens of the past, this Thursday in Oakland. Love will survive....well, maybe not love, but Will Franken, Loop!Station, Jean the bartender, and Janay Growden Rose. Hey, what more could you want?

Blurb:

We've moved our shows downtown to the Uptown in Oakland! 1928 Telegraph, at 19th, across from the Fox Theatre. Easy BART (1 block), and parking around the corner. All-night AC Line 800 bus to SF!

For a mere $6 you can see an amazing show in a great venue, and it's even like going home again because Jean, formerly of the Odeon bartends at the Uptown. What more could you want?

Here's what you get THIS coming Thursday night (not in any particular order) -- remember, it's just a mere $6!

(1) WILL FRANKEN -- If you have not seen Will perform, you will be totally blown away. Sez the NEW YORK TIMES: "What elevates Mr. Franken above your garden-variety comedian is an erudite wit and a highly developed sense of the absurd". Go check him out: http://www.willfranken.com

(2) KNEES & ELBOWS -- "Passive-agressive , bluesish, flamencoesque , cough syrup, monster, waltz music" -- or something like that. An odd mix of musicality, offbeat beats, and Janay Growden Rose's beautiful voice twisting and turning through a roller coaster of music. When you see them perform, you'll come away saying, HUH? But you'll come back for more. People do. http://www.myspace.com/kneesandelbows

(3) LOOP!STATION -- Ten years ago this band couldn't even EXIST! Why not? It's a cello and a voice looped with a cello and a voice and a cello and a voice and a cello and a voice, LIVE before your ears. Yes, they build a song from two instruments into a string quartet and choir. Robin Coomer and Sam Bass. One woman, one man, one voice, one cello, multiple layered 'loops' hand tooled and shaped into lovely, cascading, provocative orchestral compositions with an immediate soul-rocking palpability. It's an amazing sound. Loop!Station is HOT. http://www.loopthis.com

Another fabulous show brought to you by David Kaye, Nightworld Figure.

The truth about Chicken John...

Chicken doesn't even remember me from this incident, but that won't protect him from my well- planned vengeance.

Part I:

When I was the assistant concierge at an upscale hotel in Chicago which I will not name for legal reasons, Chicken and his literary entourage came through on a tour in which they were promoting a book and CD set of children's music that chicken had published through an Atlanta GA company which, for legal reasons I will not name. Chicken's publication was called 'P is for Possum'.

Right away, I knew this going to be trouble. The entourage booked a whole floor of the hotel under the name 'Dr. Allcome' and hired 2 ex-KGB agents as security guards. The passage of Chicken John back and forth to limousines and the elevator was several times announced by the unfolding of a huge enclosed curtain corridor which was a golden mustard color. We were instructed that this was to be done only during daylight hours according to Chicken's contract, and that he didn't want to see the curtain at all between sunset and sunrise, during which we were to avoid eye contact. We were instructed that if we ever had any reason to address Chicken John, we were to call him 'Dr. Allcome' in the lobby and 'Mr. Chicken John Sir' on the floor he was occupying.

Paper Dolls! Shadow Circus Creature Theatre!! Brass Mafia!!!

It ain't the Odeon, but I'll pour some beer on the floor if you'd like....

A STUPENDOUS show awaits you this Friday night at the World Famous Stork Club Oakland.

(1) THE PAPER DOLLS: Yes, the girlgroup ukulele trio, the Paper Dolls open an unbelievable show. the Paper Dolls do everything from Tin Pan Alley hits of the 1930s to Culture Club, and in three-part harmony the Andrews Sisters would envy! You have GOT to see them. You will be amazed at what they can play on their cute ukes. Sample their tunes: www.thepaperdollsband.com

(2) SHADOW CIRCUS CREATURE THEATRE: San Francisco's most belligerent puppetry troupe! Hatchet (the streetwise velociraptor) and Kafka (the giant cockroach) become 'The Laptop Banditos'; a duo of ruthless criminals bent on stealing the wireless laptops from unwary San Franciscans. Can Mayor Newsom defend the City from these nefarious fiends, or will the internet cafes forever lay in the grip of terror? TWO PERFORMANCES! An EAST BAY and a SAN FRANCISCO production - so you have NO REASON to miss it!
Check out the show: http://www.shadowcircus.com/

(3) BRASS MAFIA: Be prepared for a knock-down drag-out brass band featuring Mike Olmos - trumpet • Joe Cohen - alto, tenor, bari saxes • Joel Behrman - trombone and trumpet • Adam Theis - sousaphone and trombone • Pat Korte - drums. This band is part of the brass section of the famous Realistic Orchestra (voted best jazz band 2004), led by Adam Theis. You've GOT to hear these guys play, and you will hate yourself for giving up your music lessons when you were in 5th grade.

Chicken's gone, Let's re-open The Odeon!

Tuesday, May 30th
Think you'll be doing anything better than THIS?:

My fellow ex-Odeon goers, it has been a year since Chicken John shut the
doors to our little clubhouse in the Mission, one year since Phoenix was
robbed of his Lonesome Doorman title, and one year since any of us waited
twenty minutes to be served a watered down well drink, passed off as a top
shelf beverage. Chicken promised us a bigger and brighter future, but what
has he given us? The Winkers? I laugh at the very idea. Nay, I say, we
shall not settle for less than the Odeon, or some approximation to it.
I say, the mice will play while the cat's away. I say:

Chicken's gone, Let's re-open The Odeon!

That's right, while Chicken is in Tibet fasting and purging his aura,
we'll be in the Mission feasting on nostalgia, although I personally have
very little nostalgia since I was not of age until the Odeon was closed,
but all the more reason to give'er a second go! It'll be just like old
times, only different...

David Capurro the Yo-Yo King
KrOB and his clicking noises
Dr.Hal and his big squishy brain
Eric Ca$h, spoon bender and thing do'er
Pheonix the Lonesome Doorman
Costume PORN-E-OKEY
Frank Chu
And at least one half of Wink and Yoni,
Plus way the hell more!
C'mon what more do you want? Cake? Ice cream? Ok there will be cake (it
will be my birthday ya know) and ice cream. You still want more? Fine.
I'll bring the bottle rockets, you bring your ass, let's just DO the damn
thing!

This Once in a (house fly's) lifetime event will take place at:

12 Galaxies
2565 Mission St
8pm
Cost? $5-$10, or whatever you can afford. All the money goes to the
performers, so be as generous as you can afford.
Namaste, mother fuckers
~Cloe

Lord Japonize Knees Friday 5/26/06

Just a reminder for those who haven't seen this announcement. Actually, nobody has because I just wrote it.

Have you ever seen Lord Loves A Working Man? (9-piece "white soul"/blues band)
Japonize Elephants? (huh? How do you describe them?)
Knees & Elbows? (See Janay Growden use her beautiful voice to shatter your concept of blues and jazz)

Maybe these bands bring back old Odeon memories. The good old days. Remember? Maybe you were so stoned you don't remember seeing any of them. Have you ever thought about seeing all three of these bands together in one place?

Friday night you have that opportunity. I'm now booking shows at the Stork Club, which isn't quite the Odeon, but the beer is cheap and former Odeon regulars Xtian and Devin work there, and they have PBR for $2, and the floor is dirty. Wait a minute. I shouldn't have said that. Oh, and like the former Odeon, they even have the mark of chaos (the number 23) in their address. Who could ask for more?

Friday May 26, 2006 <--- THIS FRIDAY NIGHT!
Stork Club Oakland
2330 Telegraph Avenue near West Grand
9:00pm door; $7 bargain cover
(510) 444-6174

The world famous Stork Club Oakland is about 4 or so blocks from 19th Street BART, and by car take West Grand, the first exit from SF as you're leaving the Bay Bridge. Go 2 miles, turn left at the Taco Bell. Park.

International Xenu Day

I've been to a couple crazy events here in San Francisco, that happen
around the world.
The first is Santa Con. Every winter thousands of people dress up like
Santa, an Elf, a Sexy Santa, etc., go bar hopping, get drunk and surly,
stop traffic, for an entire afternoon.
There is also International Paul Reubens Day, on his birthday. Same
scenario, but everyone dresses up like PeeWee Herman.
I'd like to see how much interest there is in an International Xenu Day
on March 13th(or the nearest weekend), LRons Birthday. Every year all
80000 scientologists across the world have a big event to celebrate L
Ron. That would be a perfect time for a group of trouble makers to
dress up like aliens and hang out in front of the Shriners Auditorium
(where they have it in LA), or in front of your local Scientology
building.
Same terms apply, get drunk, surly, cause trouble etc.

We have 10 months to spread the word.

ALERT! - Missing Brazilian Space Suit

The space suit normally worn by Brazil's first astronaut during Monday night extravehicular activities is missing. Last night the Brazilian Space Agency had to scramble to locate a last minute replacement. Fortunately, no primates were harmed by depressurization, but there was a brief lice scare.

This is a serious matter. It went missing from 12 Galaxies sometime since the 3/27 Ask Dr. Hal Show. Your help recovering this precious space artifact will be appreciated.

What I have in mind is probably crayon or some really sloppy Macpaint kinda' stuff.

If someone wants to start posting depictions of scenes from this story into this tribe's gallery, we can use them for reference in making more such, that things look plausibly similar from one person's interpretation to the next.

Performers Make Good

I love seeing performers I've booked at the Odeon go on to do some great stuff.

Cari Lee & the Saddle-Ites (Western swing band) is featured in the East Bay Express this week because they're opening for Willie Nelson at the Fillmore. They just did a gig opening for Brooks & Dunn at the Shoreline. Interesting to note that Cari Lee and her family and friends live in 1950. They have very 1950s conventional lives, dress the part, furnish their homes with stuff out of the late 40s and early 50s, and even talk the part. In the interview she even used the term "icky", which I think went out in 1958. Great story.

And Ara Anderson, who's appeared at the Odeon 4 times, twice with each band, just returned from a European tour, plunged right into doing live music to back the Pickle Circus's latest show, and will go out on another tour shortly. He's at the Great American Music Hall this Saturday, and is written up in today's SF Weekly. See Page 4, then page 20.

Stork? Stork?

Are your needs for interesting, exciting music not being met now that the Odeon is gone? Well, I'm still pimping shows over in the East Bay (which, face it, if you can get to a NIMBY show, you can sure as hell get to the Stork Club).

David Kaye Presents:

BLUE ROOTS is an incredible blues band that combines blues, New Orleans jazz, and jug band sounds into an awesome presentation. Led by trumpeter/guitarist Lech Wierzynski (from Poland by way of the South), this is one of the few bands I've seen that is good right out of the box. A newish band, but they know exactly what they're doing. Lech is fascinating on trumpet because many people say he's channeling Louis Armstrong.

SPOOTNIK makes a triumphant return to the Stork stage. If you took a jazz/rock band, added Russian songs and backed it up by 1950s girl group backup singers, you probably wouldn't be too far off. It's music unlike anything you've ever heard, well-executed, lively, and fun.

This will definitely be a good night of music.

STORK CLUB
2330 Telegraph Avenue, near West Grand
Oakland
Tuesday, December 20
Doors 9:00pm, Cover just $5

From BART: 19th Street station, walk up to Grand (which is between 22nd and 23rd), turn left, walk to Telegraph.

Driving from SF: Take the first exit off the bridge, 880 South/West Grand -- the West Grand exit comes fast! Drive 2 miles to Telegraph. Turn left at the Taco Bell. Park.

Notes:

MY EMAIL HAS SUDDENLY CHANGED. For unexplained reasons, Yahoo has deleted my account, davidkayepromo@yahoo, so PLEASE DON'T USE IT. I have no idea

why they won't restore it and I can't reach them for an answer. So in the meanwhile, use davidkayepromo2@yahoo.com.

NEWS: Local band makes good. One of the bands I've booked in the past and I'm especially fond of, Cari Lee and the Saddle-Ites, has since appeared at Opryland, opened for Brooks & Dunn at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, and Cari Lee herself has been tapped to play lead in a musical stage play about legendary country star Rose Maddox.

Just goes to show you that if you go to one of my shows you'll see some great acts before the Big Guys snatch them away to fame and fortune.

Pandemonium reigns when the theft of a molecular mass divisor signals the first domino to fall in a nefarious crime wave to topple the noble city of Gotham. Who will rescue the fair citizens of this great metropolis?!?! Holy obvious set up, old chum!! It's none other than that dynamic duo Batman and Robin, the caped crusaders of justice, freedom and tortured aphorisms! But will they succeed when arch-super-master-criminals, the Joker, the Riddler, Catwoman and the Penguin-four of Gotham's most fiendish and fearsome foes-join felonious forces?!?!? Will our heroes fare well?!? Or will it be farewell for our heroes?!?

This BATMAN tribute is an Impossible Production, directed and written by Jim Fourniadis, produced by Erin Ohanneson with tech mastered by Ty McKenzie and stars: Jack Daniel, Colin Benoit, Mikl Em, Dr. Hal Robins, Sean Owens, Anomaly, Meliza Banales, Don Wood, Leon Setti, Craig Dickerson, and Cameron Eng.

David Kaye's Fall Shows!

Yes, I'm back with my favorite performers making lots of noise just for you! Remember, I promise high quality entertainment, no filler, no fluff, low prices.

You can see these people before they become famous. Or before they disappear into obscurity. But probably the former rather than the latter. Dig this talented line-up and see for yourself!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 10:00pm SHARP, $5
Stork Club, 2330 Telegraph Avenue near West Grand, Downtown Oakland

=> CARNEYBALL JOHNSON
Yes, the band you start to applaud and then you go Huh? Ever see a slide clarinet? Ever hear random words set to music before your eyes? Fronted by multi-instrumentalist loose canon, Ralph Carney (Anti, A&M, Warner Brothers, MTV, Island, etc recording artist), this band doesn't play out much, so this is your rare chance to see and hear fresh live music made before your eyes. At least I think it's music. Sort of. http://www.carneyballjohnson.com

=> SETH AUGUSTUS
Heir to the legacy of Tuvan throat singing, Seth is actually a Mississippi Delta-style blues singer who blends the two styles seamlessly. You wouldn't think they'd go together, but he makes them work in a memorable show. Seth not only plays guitar but also the igil, a Tuvan string instrument he hand crafts. http://www.sethaugustus.com

============================

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 10:00pm SHARP, $5
Stork Club, 2330 Telegraph Avenue near West Grand, Downtown Oakland

=> SPOOTNIK
Russian space jazz? Modern rock meets Rocky Horror backup vocalists? Post-futuristic pop? You decide. It's interesting music of the sort Frank Zappa's progeny might have produced had he been Russian and thought to play the Stork Club. http://www.spootnik.com

=> SHADOW CIRCUS CREATURE THEATRE
The Bay Area's most offensive puppetry troupe; the Shadow Circus Creature Theatre. Combining folklore, mythology, Lovecraftian monsters and pop-culture parody, Shadow Circus Creature Theatre has been one of San Francisco's most popular and outrageous puppetry troupes since its formation in 2000. Using life-sized latex and foam creatures Shadow Circus creates a world that is utterly fantastic, and yet similar to our own. Or not.

=> ONE MAN BANJO
One man, one banjo.

============================

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 9:00pm, $5
Argus Lounge, 3187 Mission Street @ Valencia, SF (1/2 block from the former Odeon)

=> ZOYRES EASTERN EUROPEAN WILD FERMENT
An evening of rich klezmer and Eastern European music -- two musics, one brass band. Led by sax player Mike Perlmutter, Zoyres not only fills your ears with richly textured music from the other side of the world, they're going to serve you gourmet SAUERKRAUT, too! Be filled with joyous music and sauerkraut. Where else can you beat that?

============================

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 10:00pm or maybe EARLIER, not sure yet, $5
Stork Club, 2330 Telegraph Avenue near West Grand, Downtown Oakland

=> THE SADDLE CATS
Probably the most authentic Western Swing band in the Bay Area. Featuring legendary pedal steel player Bobbie Black (formerly of Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Asleep at the Wheel, and a bunch of bands from the heyday of Western music. Led by Bakersfield's own Richard Chon, a member of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks and the Sons of the San Joaquin and a veteran of the Bakersfield honky tonk scene. If you've ever wanted to know what the "Western" means in "Country & Western", this is IT! It twangs, it swings, it rocks. This is the REAL DEAL. http://www.saddlecats.com

=> TBA
I'm inviting bands to contact me who think they might round out this evening.

============================

Waiting in the wings...

Brass Menagerie Balkan Brass Band, the long-awaited return of Boostamonte and Iron & the Albatross (keep your fingers crossed for these while I try to catch Ara between his songwriting and his touring!)

=> BANDS: Remember that I always welcome bands to contact me with ideas for shows. If I don't know you, send along MP3s, web pages, descriptions, photos, etc. I specialize in the unusual, so if you've got a rock band, replace the guitars with tubas or something and you'll have my ear.

Hello, former Odeots.

I'm hooked up to a new venue, the Stork Club in Oakland, where I'll be booking Tuesdays and Sundays.

Have you ever thought that that little something you do in your bedroom in front of the mirror that you've been doing since high school might be something people might want to see in public?

Did it ever occur to you that you, too, can be a star, albeit in a dive on Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, but still...

Did you ever stop to wonder that your years of practice on the saw, the washboard, and the spoons and other household tools might actually come in handy in getting you lots of attention from hot babes 'n' dudes?

Well, wonder no more! I'm booking. Tell me what you do, point me to a video of you doing it, or describe it as graphically as you can if you don't have video, and who knows, I may stick you in a show between an accordion trio and a Tuvan throat singer. Or not.

And then there's Momo and Josh's band....

Email me here.

Spots to fill starting this Sunday and the following Tuesday, and on and on.

OK, so Chicken has gathered the Mission scenesters for accordians and stuff, and "The *New and Improved* Ask Dr. Hal Show" (now with teeth-whitening Cover Charge!) is about the horrify Cafe Dew Nord, where, when and especially how, would we ever enjoy the unequalled intellectual stimulation of Ben Burke's STONED SPELING BE?

HELP! Last-minute puppeteer needed for San Fran show

Is anyone free tomorrow and Thursday night who wants to puppeteer a Chupacabra for our show at the Balazo gallery? It's a completely non-speaking role; all you'd have to do is make monster noises and bite a Gavin Newsom puppet in the crotch... We have one rehearsal tomorrow night before the show on Thursday, but it would literally only take about five minutes to learn your cues...

You would get free drinks and a third of whatever we get paid on Thursday (which'll probably be like $5). No previous experience necessary.

If you're interested, please e-mail me at creaturetheatre@yahoo.com

Quintron and Miss Pussycat got out of N.O.

>
> QUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT
> GOT OUT OF NEW ORLEANS
>
> Hi Everybody.
> This is Mark writing. Quintron and Miss Pussycat did make it out
> of New Orleans before the hurricane hit. Their van was loaded
> up with their instruments and puppets - but their house, the
> Spellcaster Lodge and ALL of their belongings are casualties of
> Hurricane Katrina. Pretty much all Q and P have is what they
> need to tour... This is a DEVASTATING turn of events for our
> friends.
>
> Here's how you can help:
>
> Those with paypal accounts can send donations to Quintron and
> Miss Pussycat's Rhinestone Records account.
> Their paypal id is:
> rhinestonerecords@h...
>
> If you don't have a paypal account, I'll gladly accept donations
> here at the label - make them payable to the Skin Graft, make it
> clear that it's for Q and P and I'll see that they get it. Other
> members of New Orleans' music community are certainly in
> trouble as well - - Q is very concerned about M.C Trachiotomy,
> StrangeBone... so many of the bands and artists you may be
> familiar with from the Engine Engine #9 compilation... Everyone
> effected by this tragedy is in our thoughts.
>
> Also, I'd be doing RUINS a tremendous disservice if I didn't
> mention that their "Pallaschtom" CD has arrived and I'm sending
> orders out as soon as I get them. It is an incredible album.
> Everything in the Skin Graft catalog is on sale at the moment
> (and will be through September 12th), so now is a good time to
> pick up any of those Quintron and Flossie And The Unicorns
> titles you've been meaning to get. Please spread the word.
>
> Thanks everyone,
>

Jonesing desperately for an Odeon fix

my first and all time favorite. i would marry it if it weren't dead with brief bouts of reanimation and the prerequisite craving for the flesh of mortals.

Anyhow, i'm heading off to Portland for the weekend and I was curious to see if any of the Crew could recommend a temporary shot of MethOdeone in the Portland area for my labor day weekend fix?

P.S. sexual favors may be negotiable in exchange for one of the Squids.

Odeon show this Saturday at the junkyard!!!!

The Odeon Bar presents: Jason Webley and the monsters of accordian

Saturday 27th

9:00

$7

----/ Event Description /-----------------------------------------------

The Odeon might be gone, but if Phoenix is working the door, Ena is tending bar, Neives is organizing everything and Chicken John is losing money on it, it's still the Odeon to us. Join us at the Odeon's home away from home: Ace Junkyard. Come see Bill the friendly Junkman stand behind his counter like a caged animal. Marvel at #3, half man, half dirt. The junkyard shows are totally fun and totally unlikely. You never know when the last one is gonna be. Please wear intelligent footwear. Tongint the Odeon is offering a show we have hosted the past 3 years. This year, we are still available for the Monsters of Accordian... we just had to improvise a bit. I can't recommend Jason enough as a performer. He is the best thing that ever came out of the Odeon. You come see for yourself. I'll double your money back. He's awesome. Daniel Ari doesn't suck either. Aaron in amusing. Here;s the write up:

Seattle's Jason Webley is a consummate performer. He appears like a back alley prophet in layers of baggy clothes, a trench coat and an old porkpie hat; he leaps onto stages, window ledges and bartops, feverishly pumping the bellows of his accordion and stomping out the beat while roaring and whispering in his passionate, gravelly baritone. His music - a mix of gypsy, folk and punk - traverses age and social background, drawing grandparents, children, punks, drunks, and lovers into the fold. He likes to sing about death, carousing, and vegetables. He recently released a much-awaited new album, Only Just Beginning, and is fresh off the stalks of his Tomato Tour.
www.jasonwebley.com

Daniel Ari, Poet of the Oompacalypse, welcomes you to his quirky, warm, and human world of left-field accordion anthems and articulate social observations. He is the author of the 21st Century's answer to "Freebird," the anthemic accordion ballad, "Misty-Eyed Lady," as well as the serio-comic punk-rock political rant, "Grammarians R Pissed!.

Duckmandu (aka Aaron Seeman), accordionist, pianist, and old school punk, does an impressive Jello Biafra imitation, which he will treat you to tonight, as well as familiar songs of other genres that have never occurred to you to be performed on accordion.

Also on tonights lineup is Cyclecides bike rides. The dizzy toy and the ferris wheel (all pedal powered) will be in effect and ready to ride. Throw in a flame thrower or 2 and you've got a smashing event. Hell, we might even crush a few cars.....

see ya there....

Okay, all you creative types, I'm thinking about doing posters for shows with silkscreening instead of photocopying or offset. I'm looking for cheap photo-silkscreening (that is where I can provide a master and they can shoot a screen with it).

Ideas anyone?

Free Lunch

Yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch when you know the owner of
the restaurant.

What's happening is this. Today, Friday August 5, the Casa Sanchez
restaurant is posing for photographs and the owners want the place to
be filled with happy eating customers. Casa Sanchez has been around
for over 40 years, and they distribute their chips and salsa all over
the West.

Anyhow, the catch is this: You have to be sitting with me or near me or pretend you're my friend even if you're not, AND you have to be there between 12 noon and 2, preferably closer to noon.

Casa Sanchez is on 24th at York, near the Brava theatre.

Everybody Talks About Endings, but...

...but there are plenty of beginnings. The Odeon spirit (and a lot less attitude, I think) has spread to many places far and wide in varying degrees and various projects. In no particular order:

In Oakland:
(1) Cafe Van Kleef
(2) Mama Buzz Cafe
(3) NIMBY

And in SF:
(4) 12 Galaxies
(5) Amnesia
(6) The Knockout (yes, it's got some of that)
(7) and probably most of all: The Darkroom

So, don't bemoan the loss of the Odeon, welcome the fact that Odeon inventiveness has spread all over creation.

Damn it.

Borg2 "Meet The Artists" -- SAturday Night

Don't forget ........

BORG2's "Meet The Artists" night is this Saturday, Aug 6, starting at 10 p.m. at Soluna Cafe & Lounge in S.F. ... All of the local Borg2-funded artists have agreed to attend and bring a special representation of their project (uhm, no fire in the restaurant, ok?). This is going to be a very special evening ....

A special reception in honor of our very own visionaries begins at 10 pm, with desserts, hot & cold hors d'oveours, and a change to meet and mingle ...

At 11 pm, we'll loosen up with bossa nova beats and other treats ...

Then at midnight, Ryel K. of Pink Mammoth fame takes the turntables so you can move your feet till 2 a.m. ....

Sugested donations are $10 - $40 ... but come out and tell us your sad story and see how cheap you can get in ...

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW at www.borg2benefit.com

We're getting promises of good publicity from a bunch of community sources, and little hint of a buzz is developing ... But the restaurant has a finite capacity, and it would be whacked to turn away people who've been committed to this experiment all along ...

The password is CLOWN.

Say it at the door tomorrow (Saturday) night at the Knockout and I'll let you in for a measly miserly $4 instead of the already cheap $5. That's $1 off!

What you'll get is the incredible Seth Augustus, Tuvan throat singer and Delta blues performer, as well as Red-Handed Jill, the new band the Walkershaws (Go VanGogh) have put together.

I want to get as many former Odeon people together in one place at one time. What better way than to do this than to offer a fabulous show?

So, talk to the doorman, say the secret password, CLOWN, and get a buck of the already ridiculously low cover.

Knockout Show

Let's see what happens. I've booked a show there for Saturday July 30.

Seth Augustus, the incredible Delta blues singer and Tuvan throatsinger (he spent a year in Tuvalu learning the technique from the masters), and Red Handed Jill. RHJ, as those close to the band call them, is another one of those bands that, well, make you want to become a pirate.

$5 cheap.

Saturday, July 30, 10pm.

Yeah yeah, it's not the Odeon. But the more profound question is, "Will DK get anybody to come to this show, or will people just wait and dilly dally and then see these acts 3 months later at Amnesia for $6?

By the way, I guarantee there will be no Mexican wresting at this show. Anybody who gets accosted by a drunk straight guy (except Dr. Fiasco) will receive their $5 back personally from me.

Reasons to go to the Knockout, #1

#1)...

... actually I don't have one.

I was in there on opening night and the vibe was essentially the same as at all the other bars that drove me to attend the Odeon in the first place. Props to the new owners for correctly identifying the bottomless well of consumer demand for SF bars with that vibe.

I didn't expect a continuation of the Odeon thing at the Knockout, but I was eager to give the new owners a good start.

They didn't kick me out, but there just didn't seem to be any reason to stay there. The clients were not friendly, but there were enough of them that the owners probably won't be needing my business anyway.

Not to damn the place with faint praise, but rather than attend next time something is supposed to be happening there, I'll probably stick to my alternate plan of just watching infommercials until my melatonin pill kicks in.

That said, the Knockout certainly doesn't seem any worse than other bars other than being further away from where I live. So... if you're in the area and want a drink, I suppose I can still recommend it.

Two Odeon people make good!

Robin Frohardt (the bartender) will be appearing with her trailer trash country band, the Runaway Truck Tramps.

Janay Growden Rose (the renowned window display artist, set designer, and all-around good person) will be appearing with Chris Cummings in an abbreviated version of her band, Knees and Elbows, as Knee and Elbow.

And the Japonize Elephants round out the evening.

At Amnesia. I have nothing to do with this show except that it'll be a good show, so GO.

Starts at 9.

If you go to the Dark Room for Bad Movie Night, then you can walk over to the Amnesia immediately thereafter; it's only a block.

I'm going away for the summer and giving the moderation of this tribe over to the Orange Box Man permanantly. If anyone needs anything or whatever you'll have to wait 'till fall. It's been really fun but I need to go see the world or something. I spent 5 years in a dingy bar coaxing the ice machine to work. I'm going to go to Tibet. Don't talk shit about me when I'm gone.

Tonight (Thursday) might be a good night for Odeon people to meet and greet, or it might not.

Regardless, Tribe.net is having a party tonight from 7:30pm on at 1015 Folsom. It's free if you bring a printout of your Tribe profile, $5 otherwise.

Will Franken will be doing whatever it is he does, in person before a live audience.

It'll be just like old times, except it won't smell like urine and you won't be crunching your shoes on broken beer glasses.

FINAL Scot Nery Shows Fri & Sat

Scot is moving to LA, so this may be the last time you'll ever see him juggle in SF.

Scot has juggled pancakes, buckets, and assorted objects at the Odeon many times over the past buncha years. Now he's chucking the City That Knows How for the City of Angles. Let's hope he finds a good angle.

The Crash Course show took a lot of chutzpah because he booked a venue for 6 solid months, figuring that if he booked the show and turned on the stove people would come. And they did. He sold out many shows.

He's at the Climate Theatre, upstairs at the corner of 9th and Folsom (above the Shadow Lounge), entrance on 9th. More info at:
http://www.crashcourseshow.com

Tonight and tomorrow are the last Crash Course shows. Here's his blurb:

Jun 23,24, 25
THEME: How to do a Live Cooking Show

I can’t take the heat. This is the final show. I’ve worked hard to bring San Francisco an experimental good time out. People have laughed, other people have eaten and laughed. This week, I’m going to tell everyone how to do his own strange and uncouth live cooking show in a small dirty theater. From this point on, you can make your own fun. I have to do other projects and touch other peoples lives with my special magic. Come to this show and find out how to do my exact show. I’ve already gone through the guesswork.

Kimric and Music and Oh What Else?

A few years ago I went to the SF Free Folk Festival, a 2-day extravaganza of music and dancing, classes and concerts and jams, all free. On the calendar there was a class listing for an hour-long class, "Play button accordion, accordions provided".

Turned out the button boxes were provided by Kimric Smythe, purveyor of Smythe's Accordions in Oakland, and longtime Odeon guy.

For me it opened up a money-making venture, since I've been playing button box (aka melodeon) in BART stations, at the Wharf, for private parties, trade shows, etc. It's also the most fun I've ever had on a musical instrument.

Well, it's happening again this weekend, full days Saturday and Sunday, at Roosevelt Middle School in SF.
http://www.sffolkfest.org/2005/frameset.html

========================

ALSO, Zoyres Eastern European Wild Ferment band, which I booked at the Odeon to an enthusiastic crowd, will be performing (also free) Sunday evening at the Free Folk Festival.

========================

And tonight, one of Chicken's favorite one-man bands, Ricky Lee Robinson, soon to be a 70s rock star, at the Argus Lounge at 9.

========================

And Wednesday night a possible drop-in appearance by the extraordinary ragtime guitarist Craig Ventresco at the Amnesia bar, 853 Valencia. If he shows, he'll be playing with Gaucho, an incredible jazzy kind of band. Otherwise, Craig will likely be at Doc's Clock tonight (Tuesday) night after 9, playing with the Hulagans, Ralph Carney's other band. One way or another Craig is finally back in town.

By the way, if you've ever seen the movies "Crumb" or "Ghost World", you've heard Craig Ventresco's music on the soundtracks.

And...Eric Cash.

SCAM is his show (Stunts, Comedy, and Music) every Wednesday Night, 8:30 p.m. Comedy Showcase @ The Green Room Comedy Club, 2801 Leavenworth in The Cannery,

It's not quite a Dr. Hal replacement, but it's a fun thing to do on a Wednesday night.

Scot Nery's Last Shows

Yes, after a 6-month run, making it the longest running live comedy cooking show in the history of the world, there are just a few more performances of Scot Nery's Crash Course show.

http://www.crashcourseshow.com/calendar.php

Scot is the Odeon bucket and pancake juggler who made it big last year with a 6 month tour of Japan. Then he came back and immersed himself in the kitchen.

After this show's final run, where will Scot go? Rumor is that he's going to LA to become a TV star. Catch Crash Course while you can.

In this post-Odeon world, there are still some interesting things going on.

One of these is the QComedy, queer comedy night at the GBLT center (Gay, Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato) at 1800 Market Street. It's produced by Larry-Bob Roberts, an Odeon irregular, by the way.

I call your attention to two comics who are especially good, Bridget Schwartz and Marilyn Pittman. I haven't seen Marilyn in ages; she was a regular on the comedy circuit, and this is also one of the few chances to see her CHEAP.

Qcomedy Showcase
Monday, June 13
7:30 reception, 8 pm show

$8-$15 sliding scale

Hosted by Coco Lopez, aka Ray Ferrer.
With: Betsy Salkind, Dolores Trevino, Marilyn Pittman, Amma, Mark
Rubnitz, Mike Camarote, Justin Scott, and featuring Bridget Schwartz.

LGBT Community Center
1800 Market St. at Octavia

Can I spam in here? I really don't do that too often.
I'm playing at The Argus Lounge Tuesday night 6/14 at 9pm.
3187 Mission (@ Valencia). It's a lovely dive within spitting distance (for some) of the Odeon.
I might even buy you a drink.
And I have a brand new album done that's free to download here:

Too bad that Hal, Chicken and krob split up to pursue solo careers and all the opening acts for the ADHS have gone on a sympathy strike.

However, I found a new venue for a revival of "The Ask Dr. Hal Show", which can be called "The New Ask Dr. Hal Show", starring Jascha Ephraim, Orange Box Man and an ipod. In the entertainment vacuum that now sucks through the Mission, it's gonna be huge.

Uh, I'm a little confused here. The Scrap House is suddenly cool because Arnold Schwarzeneggar is going to stand beside it and make political points for TV viewers? This is a reason we should support Scrap House?

For me, this would be a reason to tear the fucking house DOWN!

This is the guy who wants to build nuclear and coal plants in California.

Arnold is a blight on America. That anybody should embrace Scrap House because Arnold is going to be associated with it is blasphemy of the first order.

Shut-Ins Catalyst Tonight 6:30

Yeah, 6:30. That's before a lot of Odeots wake up. Well, suffer.

Chicken has called the Shut-Ins "the perfect Odeon band". I think of them as a sort of low-rent Rube Waddell. The Shut-Ins do hulabilly, part Hawaiian, part rockabilly.

Among their tunes are "Burn the Honkeytonk Down", and a very sweet (Mike Roper calls it purty) rendition of "Trees" (you know, "Trees, swaying in the summer breeze...") and a bunch of others.

That's tonight at the Catalyst, 312 Harriet Street, across the street from the Hall of Justice near all the bail bonds places. It's the far alley, the one across from McDonald's.

Oh, and say hi to Jenner; she works at the Catalyst now.

Oh, oh, and it's free.

Professor David Apocalypses' Love - Cult Tribe

Join today!
for those of you who might not know it, The Professor broke his back stage diving during a straight jacket escape at a Pigface show.Actually he broke it in two places. Luckily he can still walk and use all his appendages. not too sure if the fall helped or hurt the pre-exsisting brain damage.
Someone has started a tribe for him as he is very bored and could use a diversion and some support from his community. He did not like the sound of tribe, so that is why it is the love-cult tribe. Pictures will be posted soon, and i'm sure eventually he'll visit.
Don't you want to be there?

special shows

i'm a little worried that i'm not going to hear about special shows when they happen. i don't really have the reverence or attention span to be a scenester, and the odeon closed down, and i broke up with my groupie boy toy, so, like, i'm seriously worried that i'm going to miss out.
a few weeks ago i saw the alabama chicken dude perform in the tunnel under the castle, and i saw jelly donut and some pretty girl sang and someone beat boxed and it was really special and wonderful. and i want to see more things like that -- more compelling art. but again, i don't have the reverence or attention span or free evening time to be enough of a scenester to stay in the loop. so what's a girl to do? how do i find out and support the good stuff? if you know of a good email list, or something.
um, i'm not just a follower, i'm actually a nice girl and a totally smart weirdo. so don't judge me for being so blatant.

Is there anything left, worth looting at this point?

Attaboy & Burke are performing Saturday at the Mama Buzz gallery and cafe in Oakland. I was over there just the other day, and they've got a room devoted to Atta's ink drawings. He's sold several, too.

For people who are Odeon jonesing, this might be the place, as I expect to see a lot of familiar people there. And it's early enough just in case anyone was going to be wandering around 12 Galaxies later.

Here's the scoop:

Buzz Gallery Presents:
A Skin Crawling Closing Event for The Fungus art
Installation by Attaboy
featuring live entertainment by
+Attaboy and Burke and the Parts unknown (drum and Bass, Korg)
+Special legendary underground artist KrK Ryden Theramin Performance
+Alegra the Hissing CockRoach Wrangler show and Tell.

Buzz Gallery
Friday May 27th, 8 to 10pm
2318 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, 94607
